Why we use what we use in our Treats and Why we don't use what we don't use.
What we use...
Enriched/Un-bleahched
flours: Enriched means added vitamin content. Unbleached is flour which has whitened naturally with age,
not chemicals. Enriched
flour has certain FDA guidelines which must be followed to qualify as
"enriched." According to the FDA, a pound of enriched flour must have
the following quantities of nutrients to qualify: 2.9 milligrams of
thiamin, 1.8 milligrams of riboflavin, 24 milligrams of niacin, 0.7
milligrams of folic acid, and 20 milligrams of iron (Note that the
first four are B vitamins). Calcium may also be added at a minimum of
960 milligrams per pound.
Wheat Germ: Some
of the many benefits of wheat germ include lower blood levels of
cholesterol, improve energy storage in muscles, enhance performance -
endurance - and stamina, quickens reflexes, sparks alterness, improves
oxygen utilization, and balances metabolism.
Dry Milk:
Instant non-fat dry milk is made by removing the water from pastureized
skim milk. There are no added preservatives. It is fortified with Vitamins A & D.
Cornmeal: Cornmeal is an excellent source of iron, zinc, B vitamins and magnesium.
Cake Yeast: The yeast we use is in its natural form. It has not been processed or shall we say "dried." Using
the natural yeast allows for better rising, flavor, and texture in our finished product.
Canola Oil
- Used in our Chicken - Beef - and Peanut Butter & Honey Treats: Using
Canola Oil in our treats brings your furry friends treats which are
high in polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats, and significanly
lower levels of saturated and trans fatty acids. All of this means,
our treats help keep the pounds down instead of gaining weight from
unwanted fat content.
Extra Virgin Olive Oil - Used in our Tuscan Parmesan Treats: Extra
Virgin Olive Oil is made from the first "pressing" and is extracted
naturally from the task not using heat or chemicals in the process thus
alleviating "off" flavoring. Extra Virgin Olive Oil is similar to that
of Canola Oil regarding healthiness. Extra Virgin Olive Oil is the
only oil able to be consumed in its natural state without induring any
processing.
Eggs: real egg - not substitue Eggs
are a great source of protein. We all know Fido needs protein to stay
active and healthy. As with anything, an over abundance of intake may
cause health problems. Rest assured our treats contain a healthy, not
abundant, amount of protein from eggs, as only 1 egg is used to every 8
cups of dry ingredients.
All flavoring is done with the real "things" - not chemically made liquid flavorings. For instance, we use all natural dried fruits and vegetables, brown rice, real cinnamon, and all natural honey. The healthiness of our treats is important to us and your best friends.
Other Flavorings and what they provide for your pet:
Chicken - Beef Flavored
Treats We DO NOT use raw meat products in our treats. We flavor with boullion.
This alleviates the need for certain preservative and additive requirements, keeping our treats on the beneficial
edge of healthy ingredients for Fido.
Peanut Butter & Honey Treats Just
that...natural no added preservatives peanut butter and all natural
honey are used for flavoring in these, our most popular treat flavor.
Peanut butter is a great source of Vitamin E which is a strong
antioxidant that protects cell membranes from free radical attack, and
may also play a part in preventing certain diseases. Honey provides
energy and fuel to working muscles.
Tuscan Paremsan Cheese Treats 100%
Grated Parmesan Cheese is used in our treats. Cheese brings on a great
source of phosphorus, protein, and calcium. Whilest most any
cheese is high in saturated fat, the Parmesan we use is no exception.
However, only 1/4 cup can be found mixed with 10 1/2 cups of dry and
wet ingredients combined. This dispertion of such fat does not mean it
"disappears" but is obiviously not the main content of the treat.
Parsley is added for fresh breath and a dash of Oregano to give these
treats that robust Italian Style flavor!
What We DON'T Use: (yes, we crossed them out on purpose)
Oils High in Saturated Fat
As with any living organism, extra pounds are not a good thing when brought on by unncessary fat content in foods.
Added Preservatives Most preservatives are chemical based.
Not all chemicals are good for people and or canines.
Added Salt
High sodium levels are "taboo" when it comes to heart health. Keeping the old "ticker" going in
good health can be aided through lower sodium levels.
Added Sugar
While sugar can be good - we have chosen not to add any type sugar to
our treats making them more beneficial to diabetic dogs and dogs who
need to watch their weight.
Artifical Colorings
Chemicals - need we say more?
Meat Byproducts Often times
meat byproducts are made from unknown pieces and parts of animals. While dogs are carnivors - we have simply made the
decision to offer "vegetarian" style treats.
Egg Substitue
Egg subsitutes do not contain the full nutritional value of a real egg. Real eggs can be beneficial when consumed in
proper proportions.
Always
remember, Gramma Hilda's Doggie Delights are treats - not a meal, nor a
substitute for a proportioned meal of healthy formulated dog food. As
with any treat, they should be given in moderation. Should an allergic
reaction occur from any treat or food consumed by your pet, see your
veternarian for help.

How are Gramma Hilda's Doggie Delights (GHDD's) prepared and baked?
All
Delights are made the old fashioned way. They are made from scratch,
just like Gramma used to do. They are then baked at just the
right temperature for just the right amount of time to create our
unique range of textures and wonderful tastes. To keep the tradition
of true "homemade" baked fresh treats, we add Gramma Hilda's secret
ingredient...a pinch of love for dogs! For the staff of JC's Delights,
making Gramma Hilda Doggie Delights is an honor, not just a job.
Are Delights
a healthy treat?
Yes! They are a great tasting healthy
treat alternative. There is no added salt, no added sugar, no added preservatives, and no artificial colorings used in
our treats. We use all natural ingredients.
What if a person eats one of them?
Nothing - other than they might not be the tastiest thing to a human. They are human
safe as all ingredients have been FDA approved and are Grade A for human consumption.
What is the texture of Gramma Hilda's Doggie
Delights?
GHDD's
are available in a wide variety of textures. Soft Squares are
soft like a cookie - not hard and crunchy. This provides easy chewing
for smaller pets, pets with dental problems, and older pets. Crispy
Buttons are just that - a great crispy snack, similar to a cracker, for
those dogs who are looking to get their "crunch on!" Doggie Donuts and
lite and crispy allowing for the perfect snack which a dog can play
with before they feast! 1 Treat 5 Ways brings on a treat with multiple
texture choices all within one treat - go from hard and frozen to warm
a soft by serving these either frozen, refrigerated, microwaved, baked,
or thawed naturally.
What is the shelf life of Gramma Hilda's Doggie Delights once I open the package?
When stored properly in the freezer or refrigerator
after opening, the shelf life of our Soft Squares and 1 Treat 5 Ways will be approximately 1 month. DO NOT store any
treats other than Cripsy Buttons air tight out of the refrigerator - we don't use preservatives and these treats
are moist, so they will mold. Crispy Buttons and Doggie Donuts may be stored air tight un-refrigerated for
up to 3 months.
